Welcome to Victoria Falls
If there’s one destination in Zimbabwe that never fails to impress visitors, it’s Victoria Falls. Known locally as the gateway to one of the world’s greatest natural wonders, this vibrant tourist town offers much more than just a glimpse of the famous waterfall.
I’ve visited Victoria Falls several times, and every trip feels different. One day you could be cruising along the Zambezi River at sunset, the next you might be soaring over the Falls in a helicopter or spotting elephants on safari. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker, a family traveller, a foodie, or simply looking to relax, Victoria Falls has something unforgettable waiting for you.
How to Get There
By Air
Most international and regional visitors arrive through Victoria Falls Airport, located about 20 kilometres from town.
The airport receives flights from major cities including Harare, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Nairobi, and other regional destinations. I highly recommned Fastjet for Flights from Harare and Joburg
By Rail
For a nostalgic travel experience, visitors can travel by train from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls. The journey offers a unique glimpse of Zimbabwe’s countryside.
By Road
Victoria Falls is connected by road to major Zimbabwean cities. Driving from Bulawayo takes approximately four to five hours, while Harare is around eight to nine hours away.
Public Transport
Within town, taxis, hotel shuttle services, tour operators, and local transfer companies make getting around easy. Many attractions are located within walking distance of the town centre.
Best Time to Visit
The Falls can be visited year-round.
- February to May offers the most powerful water flow.
- June to August provides pleasant temperatures.
- September to December is excellent for wildlife viewing and adventure activities.
Top Attractions
Victoria Falls
The star attraction is, of course, Victoria Falls itself.
Known as “The Smoke That Thunders,” the Falls stretch over 1.7 kilometres and create one of the most spectacular natural displays on Earth. Walking through the rainforest viewpoints is an experience you’ll never forget.
Victoria Falls Bridge
Built in 1905, Victoria Falls Bridge offers incredible views of the gorge and waterfall.
It’s also home to some of the region’s most famous adventure activities.
Helicopter Flights Over the Falls
One of my personal recommendations is taking a helicopter flight. Known as the “Flight of Angels,” it provides breathtaking aerial views of the waterfall, river, and surrounding wilderness.
Devil’s Cataract
This viewpoint is often one of the first stops for visitors and offers stunning panoramic views of the Falls.
Livingstone Island Views
While the island itself is accessed from the Zambian side, visitors in Victoria Falls can enjoy spectacular views across the gorge toward this famous location.
Restaurants and Food Experiences
The Boma – Dinner & Drum Show
The Boma – Dinner & Drum Show is one of the town’s most popular dining experiences.
Guests enjoy traditional Zimbabwean cuisine, live entertainment, drumming, dancing, and cultural performances.
Lookout Café
Perched above the Batoka Gorge, The Lookout Café offers some of the best views in town.
The food is excellent, but the scenery steals the show.
